31/03/2008 | Go North, Go Screenwriting

Are you a writer with a track record but not particularly in screen? Have you got what it takes to write a brilliant and compelling drama script? Do you normally work in isolation but would relish the opportunity to team write? Then get your application in to take part in two screenwriting workshops with BAFTA winning screenwriter, Jim Eldrige ("Behind the Set", "The Ghost Hunter" and "King Street Junior". It's part of the Go North event that is coming to Dundee for the first time to showcase and develop talent in the creative industries. The workshops have been developed by Amanda Millen, the Screen & Broadcast Industries Development Manager on secondment to Highlands and Islands Enterprise from the BBC.

The deadline for applications is 9th April 2008 and you must be able to attend both workshops - in Inverness on 12th April and the residential workshop in Dundee from 5th to 6th June 2008. To attend you must live and work in the catchment areas for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (http://www.hie.co.uk/areamaps) or Dundee City Council. The workshops are aimed at writers of all sorts who would like to test their writing and creative abilities in developing a specific idea for television drama - looking at what to develop and how it all fits together.

Emily Dewhurst, Dundee City Council's Music Development Officer, says "it's great that Amanda and Jim are bringing the screenwriting workshop here this year following the music promo screen session at Go Dundee last year with leading producer Simon Poontip". The Inverness workshop is free to attend and lunch will be provided. Please note that no reimbursement for travel or accommodation will be given so please bear this in mind when applying. Maximum space for 15 writers.

The Dundee workshop is 2-day residential and will develop your idea further using the understanding gained from Workshop 1. The aim for this workshop is to produce Character Bible, Series Arcs, treatment for the first episode and an outline of subsequent episodes. Again, it's free to attend with lunch being provided. As it's residential, accommodation costs will be covered, but you need to make your own travel arrangements and there's no reimbursement. Maximum space on this workshop for 6 writers.

Workshop 1 - McLean Room, Eden Court, Inverness, Sat 12th April 2008 9.30am-5pm

Workshop 2 - Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), Thurs 5th-Fri 6th June 2008 9.30am-5pm each day

To apply you need to submit a 1 page writing sample. It can be an excerpt from something you've written, a treatment for a drama - whatever format; anything that illustrates your writing skill and creativity. The ideas in your writing sample will not be developed so don't agonise over this submission - it's purely for an idea of your talent. You also need to send a paragraph biography in the body of your email. Electronic submissions only please and anything not fulfilling the requirements will not be considered (e.g. writing sample longer than 1 page or a CV or attached CV instead of 1 para. biog). To get started you will be set a creative reading task prior to the first workshop.

23/01/08 | goNORTH 2008 Launch Party

A reception at Fat Sams Live with representatives from the music industry throughout the UK were given a taste of what's in store for visitors to goNORTH in Dundee on June 5 & 6.

The crowd was entertained by one of Dundee's top new bands, Luva Anna, who played an acoustic set and gave a glimpse of the strength of the talent in the city. Event organiser Shaun Arnold of GoEvents said: "The city has some amazing talent and, when you combine this with some great venues and enthusiastic audiences, this should be a goNORTH to be remembered."

One person also looking forward to the event is award-winning music industry PR Murray Chalmers of EMI, a Dundonian who is highly regarded in the business. He said, "it's exciting coming back to Dundee and seeing a burgeoning music scene that has grown largely outwith the glare of the national media. You can feel not only the thrill of discovering new bands but also the strong sense of community that is making the Dundee music scene so focused and increasingly successful. Hopefully goNORTH can help elevate the profile of the musicians and the city, a place which feels more and more like a brilliant, diverse hub for the arts."
